How did we make the journey from the Resurrection of Jesus Christ to the Easter Bunny? As a society I am perplexed, as well as lacking understanding as to how Easter has become synonymous to a mythical white bunny who gives Easter eggs and candy to children. According to everything I was taught and know, Easter is the day Jesus Christ our Savior rose from the dead and ascended to sit at the right hand of God, the Father.

Nowhere, is it mentioned, even in movies, of an Easter Bunny.

In a time where statistics say that only 1 in 5 Americans believe in God, this kind of makes sense. Don't believe in God? Why not believe in a mythical legendary creature that got its start around 1600.

Wikipedia states that:

"The Easter Bunny is a mythical character depicted as an anthropomorphic rabbit. In legend, the creature brings baskets filled with colored eggs, candy and toys to the homes of children on the night before Easter. The Easter Bunny will either put the baskets in a designated place or hide them somewhere in the house for the children to find when they wake up in the morning.

The Easter Bunny is very similar in trait to its Christmas holiday counterpart, Santa Claus, as they both bring gifts to good children on the night before their respective holiday. Its origin is disputed but the character was mentioned as early as 1600; some trace it to alleged pre-Christian fertility lore..."--this entry on Wikipedia is also filed under 'Humor.'

The Easter Bunny did not heal the sick, make the blind see, or forgive sins. No, he just comes along the night before Easter passing out candy, eggs and toys to good little children. Good little children? I wonder if their parents believe in God?

I'm being difficult about Easter, because I believe this is a sacred time. Not a Hallmark holiday. I wanted to write something about this earlier this week, as it has been on my heart for the past 10 days. I kept hemming and hawing, being indecisive on whether I should write something about Easter. My fear was in losing readers.

However, many may question my motives. They may even question the fact that Jesus even walked the earth. Some believe that he was just a man and nothing more.

To believe that, is to risk your very soul. This belief is like gambling, and the truth will not be revealed until your death.

I don't want to wait until I die to find out or begin believing in the Savior. To me, Jesus Christ is real. He walked the earth as a man so he could experience first hand all the temptations, and desires we experience. He wanted to understand why it was so hard to follow God.

What he learned was that people were confused. They were confused then, and they are more confused now.

With so many problems in the world today, sky high unemployment rates, home foreclosures, husbands murdering families, mothers killing their own children. It's no wonder people have lost hope. There is just too much bad stuff going on in the world to think about a man who is supposed to be so great and good that He is going to rescue us. We need saving, and no president, black or white, can do it.

The only one who can save us is Jesus Christ. "For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him." -- John 3:16-17

Jesus came to offer salvation to us all. Man can not save themselves; only the Lord alone is the Savior---and not the Easter Bunny.

"Don't put your confidence in powerful people; there is no help for you there. When they breathe their last, they return to the earth, and all their plans die with them."--Psalm 146:3-4

What a perfect image you used for this topic. It just sort of dawned on me one day. Afterwards, I was 'outraged' whenever there was a 'happy holiday' message from corporate managers --- all of the major religious holidays had 'proper' icons except Christmas and Easter, which had the Santa Claus and Bunny. It all seems to be about instant (and temporary) gratification in a 'give me' society where religion is less of a defining factor in child rearing.

Thank you SBA for commenting and reading. Most people don't understand, nor do they want to understand the dichotomy of it all.
